Gülbin Ünlü's artistic practice celebrates the mash-up, which is evident not least in her interdisciplinary approach that includes artistic collaborations, photographic and video works, installations, performances, music and painting. Her works search for orders outside the guidelines of conventions. They cannot be sorted encyclopedically or chronologically. The thematic fields called upon are too intertwined in their superimposition and overload of derivations and references, encompassing the private and the political, the biological and the cultural in equal measure. Likewise, through the multi-layered combinations of fragments, digital and analog source material combine in individual works and become indistinguishable from one another. In doing so, Ünlü also breaks down genre boundaries, as in the hybrid technique between print and painting developed by the artist, and works installatively with the possibilities of space. The resulting works question the usual categories and classifications, while Ünlü undertakes a reevaluation of values that takes place as a dismantling of existing hierarchies.
Gülbin Ünlü lives and works in Munich, where she studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich with Prof. Markus Oehlen and graduated in 2018, for which she was awarded the Erwin and Gisela von Steiner Foundation Prize. She was involved in the artist collectives T.A.G. and VKP, committee member of the art space FLORIDA Lothringer 13 and is part of the artist duo TAF since 2022.
